A new art exhibition that breathes life into chairs is now showing at the newly minted MAD Museum of Art & Design. Seated in the heart of Orchard road at the Mandarin Gallery, MAD is the new multi sensory space that celebrates art and life. In conjunction with its festive soft launch, the quietly intense work by Korean artist Sohn Jinah will open the doors for the pre-inauguration in an exhibition dubbed "Deep Inside".
Acclaimed and accredited for paintings drenched in meticulous motifs raised by layers of acrylic and painstakingly prepared tapestries of micro geometrical details, the artist's work is well loved for the loud and dazzling scenery for which her ubiquitous chairs sit quietly and in solitude. Sohn Jinah has been humanizing chairs for more than a decade. The chair is the visual explanation of the idea of existence - a depiction of the most intimate space where the soul sits and therefore represents the self. Through different interpretations via angles and positions of the chairs as well as a bold variety of canvas sizes and proportions through the collection, the artist vividly conveys emotions, thoughts and the perception of reality with respect to the surrounding. To the beholder, Sohn Jinah's seemingly calm compositions of quiet chairs and loud splendid backgrounds actually seethe with a clear voice of thought that emerges from deep within the painting - life from the outside and at the core of the being can sometimes coexist in a disjointed manner and hence reinforces the strong sense of isolation felt in modern society. Similarly, her installation art is a continuation of her expression of the human relationship, the sense of isolation in society and ultimately, hope.
Born in 1967 in Seoul, Korea, Sohn Jinah has earned the Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture as well as Painting at the State University of New York. She has participated in over 18 years of exhibitions and art fairs all over the world and her work can be seen in the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Korea.
